Preventative care is extremely important when it comes to your eye health and vision. With regular comprehensive eye exams, our optometry team is better able to assess your eye health and catch any abnormalities or common eye conditions early on. From there, we can come up with a course of treatment that fits your lifestyle needs and your budget, while ensuring that your eyes are as healthy as possible.
We recommend scheduling eye exams at regular intervals throughout your life. According to the American Optometry Association, you should follow a loose schedule that includes:
During your initial eye exam at Brighton Eye Associates, you’ll first have a consultation with the optometrist to go over your medical history, your lifestyle factors, and any vision problems you may be experiencing. This is the best way for our team to get an idea of your lifestyle needs and will help us determine whether or not you may be a good candidate for contact lenses or other vision correction options.
Next, we’ll complete an eye health evaluation where we may dilate your pupils to view certain aspects of the eye including the retina, macula, optic nerve and blood vessels. This evaluation allows our team to get a clear picture of the different aspects of the eye and ensure that they are working properly. Additionally, slit lamp testing and tonometry allow us to measure eye pressure and examine the front of the eye.
We will also conduct an eye function evaluation to check how your eyes focus, determine eye dominance, color sense and other vital functions. If we notice any issues, we may suggest vision therapy or other treatments ensure your eye stay healthy and functioning properly.
Finally, we will complete a vision exam to see how well your eyes are working to refract incoming light. In addition to the standard eye chart reading test, we will also make vision adjustments using a phoropter to find your exact corrective lens prescription. If necessary, our optometrist may suggest corrective contact lenses or eyeglasses depending on your needs.
Contact lenses are a convenient, safe and affordable vision correction option that are ideal for patients of many different ages and lifestyle backgrounds. If you are interested in wearing contact lenses alone or in combination with eyeglasses, our optometry team will also need to conduct a contact lens exam.
During your exam, our eye doctors will perform several special tests to evaluate your vision with contact lenses and determine the size and type of contact lenses that will work best for you. We may also perform a tear film test to make sure that your eyes produce enough tears so that you can comfortably wear contact lenses.
Once we determine the right style and fit, we will then discuss the different types of contact lenses available including disposable contacts, extended wear lenses and even colored lenses.
